Last week we celebrated several farewell events to farewell our Class of 2018.

On Tuesday 23 October the entire student body, Year 12 parents and staff joined together in the school hall to formally farewell the Year 12s. This is always a moving experience for the Year 12s and the whole Balcombe community. We really do have a talented group of students who entertained us with their vocal and dance moves! This assembly culminated in the Year 12s exiting under a Year 7 guard of honour. This proved to be a very emotional moment for all concerned.

On Wednesday 24 October, the more informal breakfast for the Year 12s was held where everyone dressed up and we had Telly Tubbies; Ninja Turtles; avatar characters (I wonder how that blue paint washed off!!) and of course our ABBA lookalikes who entertained us on the oval with their rendition of Dancing Queen.

The Class of 2018 then paraded around the school much to the delight of everyone and then moved onto Gravity Zone, where a great time bouncing around was had by all.

Our farewell celebrations came to a highlight at our 2018 Valedictory dinner at the Mornington Race Club, where each student was presented with a memorable gift from the school and were individually presented to our Acting Principal, Mr Warrick Wynne.

These last few days were very special and a lovely opportunity for teachers, parents and students to celebrate the strong bonds that they have all forged this year.

Good luck to the Class of 2018 for the upcoming examination period.

It was lovely to see so many grandparents join our Foundation to Year 2 classes on Wednesday 17 October. Everybody enjoyed the special musical items and photo stories at assembly, followed by some math games in the classrooms. It was a wonderful opportunity for the students to ‘be the teacher’ and explain activities. Thank you to all the grandparents for attending and for graciously accepting defeat in many games!

All the students were very excited and proud to share our classrooms with you.

The OES group had been eagerly looking forward to the highlight of their course and why not? Three days learning how to scuba dive and then putting these skills to use in the beautiful Port Philip Bay. Beginning at Portsea Pier the students soon realised why this location is known as the home of the Sea Dragon, seeing many of these amazing sea creatures. The students also saw plenty of fish, Banjo sharks and even a beautiful sting ray under the waves. On the final day students took a boat trip to Pope's Eye, where they dived around the manmade structure enjoying the vast array of sea life in crystal clear conditions. We even had a seal diving with us for company. The trip was great lesson in just how amazing the outdoors is, even in our own backyard.

Balcombe Grammar congratulates the following students for their recent sporting achievements:

  • Edie Brooks who recently competed in the National Powerlifting Championships in Perth and finished with three Australian junior records and one world record!
  • Geena Barbour-Davy who finished 1st in Triple Jump and 2nd in Long Jump at the School Sport Victoria State Championships and she is now off to Nationals for Long Jump.
  • Cade Bond who qualified for the 50m freestyle short course and long course 2018 State Swimming Championship finals.

The students on-going commitment and dedication to their sport is outstanding and these latest results are definitely a reflection of all their hard work.

This year commemorates the 100th Anniversary of Remembrance Day. Balcombe Grammar students have been invited by the Mornington RSL to participate in a Service of Remembrance on Sunday 11 November 2018.

We are looking for 20 Secondary students to take an active role in the Service, carrying plaques bearing the names of volunteers who went to war from old Mornington Shire (Mornington, Mt Eliza, Mt Martha and Moorooduc).

The Service will be held at Memorial Park, Albert St, Mornington and students would need to arrive at 10:15am in full winter school uniform. The Service commences at 10:25am and concludes just after 11am.

Please discuss this opportunity with your child/children and should they wish to represent the school at the Service please complete the online form via the link below.

Note: participation in this event can be included in a student's application for Service Colours in 2019.
