Balcombe Grammar students up for a debate at the annual SIS Competition

On Thursday 23 July, a strong group of debaters across Years 7-10 represented Balcombe Grammar School in the annual SIS Debating Competition. Held at Rivercrest Christian College in Clyde, students presented 2 debates per team, with one topic being unseen until their arrival on the day, encouraging them to think quickly and critically. Competing against other independent schools, our students presented high-quality and thoughtful debates, leading to the following results:

• Junior 1 Team – undefeated across both debates
• Junior 2 Team – secured one win from two debates
• Intermediate – undefeated across both debates

We are extremely proud of our Junior 2 Team as this was their very first time formally debating.

Adding to this success, Balcombe Grammar students also won best speaker in every round they debated in. The adjudicator from the Debaters Association of Victoria, awarded best speaker to:

• Arlo Cross
• Hunter West – twice!
• Savannah Reid – twice!
• Xavier Dodd 

Debating Coordinator, Taylah Dorling said this is a remarkable achievement and a testament to their preparation, teamwork and commitment.
